From Jekyll Island we traveled 72
miles to a stop off the ICW about 8 miles called Sunbury Crab Co. We
were told to call on the telephone as the dock hands were likely in the
kitchen cooking and wouldn’t hear the radio. This should have told us
something! It was raining when we arrived and we were the only boat in
the “marina”. I put it in quotes because it was really a restaurant
with a couple docks. The guys that came to help us get tied up were in
their aprons but were very friendly and we were quickly secured to the
dock. I asked where the laundry was and was told to walk up to the
restaurant and the girls would show me. “Follow me” the gal said and
much to my surprise the laundry was the washer and dryer in Elaine’s
(the owner’s) house. You just can’t make this stuff up. Pam and Chris
from “Reflection” pulled in after calling Ken on the phone. They
couldn’t reach anyone in the marina either on the phone or radio so
called Ken. Don’t you love it?????!!!
We were invited to Reflection for
cocktails and then the four of us went up to the restaurant for dinner.
Elaine, her husband and two boys run the restaurant. The food was
great, the atmosphere was perfect! Elaine joined us after dinner for a
drink and shared stories of how the restaurant was planned and built.
We had a wonderful time with Pam and Chris and so enjoyed Elaine and her
staff! This night will be remembered as a highlight of the trip!
We left Sunbury Crab Co. in the morning. The picture above is of the entrance
to Hell Gate, a very narrow and reportedly shallow section of the ICW.
“Reflection” was behind us and had boated this area several years
previous. We radioed him to see if he wanted to lead the way. “No,” he
replied, “you draw less and besides this will be an experience you can
tell your grandchildren.” We headed into Hell Gate and found it to
really be a non event. Yes it was narrow and we had to watch the depth
but didn’t have any trouble at all.
We let this guy come out of Hell
first before we entered just in case it was as shallow as we had been
told. Made us feel like we were back on the river seeing this tug.
The picture below is of the “Moon River”, the one that Johnny Mercer wrote the song about and Andy Williams sang.
We arrived at Isle of Hope Marina just outside of Savannah, GA. They have a
courtesy car so we headed for the grocery store to provision the boat
in preparation for the arrival of our good friends, Jim and Linnea.
Jim and Linnea had done the Loop in 2005/2006 and Ken and I had joined
them in New York Harbor and traveled up the Hudson River and Champlain
Canal system with them. It will be so great to have them aboard!
Welcome aboard Jim and Linnea!!!! Pat
