Beaufort, SC

We left Georgia yesterday and headed into South Carolina.  The trip up the ICW was beautiful with lots of my favorite dolphins!

We met some pretty big ships along this section of the waterway.  Ken radioed this one and said we would wait for him to enter the channel and we would head in behind him.  Smart move Captain!
This was our mode of transportation for touring Beaufort!  The horse’s name is Merlin and he was an excellent driver.
Beaufort did not disappoint!  Just like Savannah, the homes here are antebellum style beautiful southern homes.

The home below has been for sale for two years but these gorgeous Amaryllis continue to bloom and frame the home.

We learned that homes in the south paint the ceilings of their porches either blue or black to mimic the daytime or night time sky.  What this does is keeps certain kinds of bees, such as mud daubers from building nest in the ceilings.  The yellow house had its porch ceiling blue while the other one is black.  Would this work to paint eaves in the north to prevent wasp nests ???  Perhaps we will try it in Burnsville!

We finished our carriage ride and did the rest of our sight seeing on foot.  First stop was the Chocolate Tree where Forrest Gump bought his box of chocolates!  Tom Hanks still has chocolates shipped to him yearly from the Chocolate Tree!

Of course with it being Easter we had to buy a chocolate Thumper bunny!

On to the Episcopal church of St. Helena’s celebrating its 300th anniversary this year.  In the civil war it was used as a resting place for the soldiers.  The beautiful altar was carved and given to the church by Union soldiers following the war.

This is the hanging tree where many a man was hanged, the last one in the 1930’s.
Many movies were filmed in Beaufort!  Pat Conroy, the author of such books as “Prince of Tides”, “the Great Santini” and “Beach Music” was raised and lives in Beaufort.  Barbra Streisand directed and filmed “Prince of Tides” in Beaufort.  She was not well liked by the locals.  The story goes that she called Paris Island Marine base near by, spoke to the General and complained about all the Harrier jets flying by and making so much noise so early in the morning and so often.  She actually hung up on the general.  The next morning at day break the general ordered 4 jets to fly over Beaufort, and directly over the house she was staying in, and make numerous passes. The morning paper had the General apologizing to the residents about the noise, but stated he wanted Ms. Barbra to hear the “Sound of Freedom!”

Beaufort has a rainbow row of houses painted pastel colors.  Home owners today are not allowed to change the paint colors.
We ended our day with a rainbow over the marina and an excellent dinner at “Emily’s” with Marc, Michele, Jim and Linnea!  Such a wonderful evening with good friends, old and new!!!!
