17 Locks In Two Days - Whew!

We left Jackets II in Smith Falls and set out down the Rideau!  We need to keep 20BUCK$ headed somewhat towards the west with a few detours.  It was Canada Day and we weren’t sure how far we would get or if there would be any space open on the lock walls for us to tie up.  Always the unknown....every day a new adventure.

We have entered absolutely gorgeous cruising waters!  It reminds us so much of northern MN.  Around every bend is more beautiful scenery!  Here are just a few pictures of our day on the water.  Love seeing Loons again!

We arrived at the Davis lock with perfect timing.  Davis lock has power and we had been on the generator for the last 3 nights so a recharge of our batteries was in order.  A boat was just about to leave and the lock master, John, said just tie up here until this boat leaves and you can have his spot.  It was the best spot in the whole mooring field.  Here was our view!  Breathtaking!!!

It was a hot day so a swim was on my agenda!  The water is so clear.  Into the water I went only to have the Captain hand me a scrub brush to try and get the scum line off the boat.  What is up with that???  Ken jumped in right after me with his own brush so we both attacked the bottom.

The other boaters in the marina were so welcoming and very anxious to hear about our trip!  The lock master John is retiring this summer after 41 years.  He couldn’t have been a better ambassador for Park’s Canada.  The best lock on the Rideau with the best lock master, John and the best dog, Molly!  We agree John, it was great!  Ken even filled out a survey!

We had an extra special treat while here.  This young man across the canal from us played “Oh Canada” on his french horn at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. followed by “Taps” played on a bugle at sunset!  It was fantastic, sent chills up my spine.  What a talented young man!!!

We waved good-bye to our new Canadian friends this morning and headed for Kingston, ON.

More beautiful scenery was in store for us today.  We missed the stair step locks at Jones Falls by about 10 minutes and had to wait 2 hours before they brought the water back up to take us down.  During our wait we toured a working blacksmith shop and picked wild flowers to liven up the boat.

The rest of the day we hit the locks right on.  A total of 12 locks and 27 miles later, we are tied up at the bottom of the Kingston Mills locks.  It only took 9 hours and 15 minutes!  Oh my!

Here is where we are docked for the night.  We are four miles out of Kingston and will have no locks tomorrow!  YEAH!  We will head up the Bateau Channel in the morning entering the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River!  The plan is to spend a couple days in the islands before heading to the Trent Severn Waterway!

So much yet to see and the clock is ticking!  The people and sights of Canada have been a real highlight of the Loop!  More to come as we continue to enjoy Canada!    Pat
