Last days in Jersey!

Last Thursday, the live-a -boards next to us, Kim & Glen, took us on a car ride down to Sandy Hook. Sandy Hook is about 40 miles south of Jersey City.

Sandy Hook was named due to the peninsula of sand, shaped like a hook, which forms a large protected bay. You can see Manhattan in the background.

Twin Lighthouses were built here to guide the ships.

These lighthouses have some of the largest Fresnel lenses made. This one is on display, and the light source is a single compact fluorescent bulb!

The lens bends the light rays so they are concentrated at the center of the lens, which gives a very bright light which is visible for miles.

New Jersey has a beautiful coast line, and some very nice homes lining it!

Kim & Glen treated us to a delightful lunch at a beach front restaurant, and then we toured some more of the New Jersey coast line before heading back. Thank You guys so much for your hospitality! You have been wonderful neighbors, and we wish you well on your upcoming marriage!

On Friday morning, friends Rich and Judi arrived. They will spend a week with us, traveling up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal System, and into the bottom of Lake Champlain, where we will hopefully find an Amtrak station for them to head back. Pat & I did this same leg with our friends Jim & Linnea in 2006.

As it was still early in the day, Pat, Judi & Rich headed into Central Park, where they toured around the Strawberry Fields area. I was coming down with a sinus cold, so stayed back at the boat.

Central Park is an amazing oasis of greenery, ponds, walking paths, and a myriad of things to do, right in the heart of NYC.

That evening, we walked into Hoboken for dinner. This park is right next to the marina we are at. The photo to the right is a “dead end cobblestone path” with three pairs of stone columns, forming a line directed at the location of the Twin Towers. You can see two of the four new towers, beginning to take their place in the NYC skyline.

Friday  morning we got an early start. We wanted to run back down the Hudson a ways to get another look at Lady Liberty, before heading up river.

Next stop, 1/2 Moon Bay, then Kingston, NY. This portion of the Hudson River is very pretty! Check back soon for another update!
