Port Washington and Racine!

On Wednesday, we traveled from  Manitowoc, WI to Port Washington, WI. The light shown above, at the entrance to Port Washington Harbor, is one of the most unique channel markers we have seen on the entire trip!

Port Washington lies between Sheboygan and Milwaukee. It was voted one of the 10 best harbors in the US in 2007. As soon as we entered the harbor, we could see why. They have the best breakwater I have seen at any marina, some of the nicest floating concrete docks we have seen, and a gas dock crew and check in attendant that were in the top 5 of what we have experienced on the entire trip!

This marina was FULL of Cruisers Yachts boats. There used to be a Cruisers dealer here. On our dock alone, I counted 10 Cruisers boats. We were greeted by one of the dock residents who helped us tie up.

Sorry - no more pics of Port Washington. It had been a long day, and we just wanted to get something to eat, get a good nights rest, and be off to Racine in the morning.

Friends Denny & Jean used to be on our dock in Red Wing. Three years ago they purchased a new boat in Racine, and decided to keep it there. Racine is also the home port of Dean and Beth on Kismet, who we have traveled some of the Loop with. They are still behind us in Canada.

Denny & Jean and Dean and Beth will have to get acquainted when Kismet arrives back in Racine. They both have Boating Birds! Denny & Jean have Foster DunDee, a cockateel, and Dean and Beth have Ziggy, an African Gray. Both birds travel on the boats!

Thursday night, we just kicked back in the marina, and caught up with Denny & Jean.

Friday turned out to be a packed day!  It started with breakfast at Franks Diner.

 They have rules at Franks.
  1. Don't be rude! Just leave if you feel rude.
  2. If we are busy, and you are in a hurry, come back when we are not busy.
  3. Eat what you get, even if it ain’t what you ordered.
  4. No complaining!

I could not figure out if Franks was built to look like an old train car, or if it was an old train car turned into a diner.
In any event, it was an “experience”, and the food was good.

After breakfast, we took a little tour by car around town, then took the dinghys for a cruise thru the harbor, and up the river a ways.

Back at the marina, we got to meet Denny & Jeans dock neighbors, Bob & Jeannie. They are Captains, and used to do  fishing charters. Jeannie’s sister and brother in law, Frank & Joanie, also came down, and the eight of us headed up into town, for Racine's First Friday event!

The first Friday of each month, Racine blocks off the downtown streets, provides entertainment, vendors, and opens up the streets to a big party! Of course, Jean & Jeannie were the Queens of the ball!

One of our stops was at Toad Hall, where this ceramic Toad sits right next to a bottle of tequila. The Toad suddenly appears on the bar in front of you, and you are expected to “Lick The Toad”.

A few of us had to try it! Then you have the obligatory shot of tequila to “sanitize” your tongue!

........and receive your “Graduation Certificate” from Toad Hall!

Then it was off to John’s Dock for a late night snack, and a pretty walk along the water front back to the boats.

On Saturday, the girls went shopping downtown, and Denny and I drove out to a mega RV dealer on a hunt for a part Denny needed for his water system. Saturday afternoon it started to rain, so we took the time to catch up on our log entries, pay some bills, and go thru two months worth of mail Denny and Jean brought for us.

Saturday afternoon, another boating couple from Red Wing stopped by. Tom & JoAnn were on their way to a wedding anniversary in Kenosha, so we all had lunch and caught up on old times.

Not sure what is in store for us for Sunday - but knowing Denny & Jean, it will be an “event”!

Monday we will leave for Chicago, where we will enter back into the river system.
Stay tuned for the next adventure!

Say Good Night Foster!
